Welcome to Day 3 of my 5 day devotional on shame.
Many times we build our identities base on shame, without even knowing it. Shame can hijack our sense of self-worth and change the narrative of our lives. It tells you:
- You’re an awful wife and mother.
- Who would want to be your friend?
- If people really knew you, they wouldn’t like you.
I know the voice of shame. I had a strict code of behavior for myself. If I didn’t live up to my code, I was disappointed in myself and felt ashamed. I felt like a failure.
Shame runs deep. Don’t let it steal your identity. We find the truth of our identity in Jesus Christ.
Application: How would your life change if you lived thinking about what is lovely, pure, right, noble and true–instead of thinking about all the things you believe are wrong with you?
Prayer: Lord, give me eyes to see myself as you see me. Help me to believe I am acceptable to you, no matter what I’ve done.
Remind yourself: I am acceptable to God.
